Hey Mavis

"Hey Mavis evokes the best elements for what draws (people) to traditional music but in a fully modern context, devoid of hokey recidivism." Really wonderful."

Hey Mavis

Every person has a story to tell, and every Hey Mavis performance is an energetic, soulful, edgy and colorful weaving of those stories into Americana-style music and song.

Formed while serving as artists-in-residence in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Hey Mavis is the husband-and-wife team of Laurie Michelle Caner (banjo, vocals, songwriter) and Eddie Caner (fiddle, viola, vocals). The couple’s deep love of life, music, and raising a healthy family are clearly reflected in their songwriting, with subject matter ranging from stories of canal boat worker to the beauty and heartache of motherhood.

The group's first CD, Red Wine, was produced by Don Dixon (REM, Red Clay Ramblers, Hootie & the Blowfish). Released in August, 2010, Red Wine immediately climbed the national FolkDJ radio charts, peaking at #5 in September with over 13,000 airplays by 150 DJs. The CD finished the year at #13 in the Folk Alley “Top CD's of 2010” alongside new relases by Tim O'Brien, Peter Rowan, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Chieftains and Bob Dylan.

Laurie was a founding member of the regionally-acclaimed female vocal group "The Rhondas" and has facilitated songwriting workshops throughout Northern Ohio at venues such as the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, the Cuyahoga Valley EEC, Lakeside, and First Night Akron. Eddie has performed worldwide with over 25 major artists, including Smokey Robinson, Page & Plant, Pavarotti and Wayne Newton. He teaches physics and innovation at Case Western Reserve University.

Hey Mavis is currently recording and performing with Don Dixon, Marti Jones, Sarah Benn, Brent Kirby, Billy Lestock, Jay Elliot, and other great musicians..
